Threat actors are an agile and determined bunch – keen to share exploit kits and early adopters of new technology. As the NCSC has warned, many are now using AI to automate and accelerate vulnerability research and exploit development. Their job is also made easier by the ever-expanding size of the typical corporate attack surface. And they only need to get lucky once.

On the other side, stretched security teams are being overwhelmed by alerts and lack the actionable intelligence to prioritise. Siloed teams make the problem worse. There’s plenty of room for miscommunication between the SOC team chasing threats, vulnerability teams trying to understand what to patch first, and security infrastructure specialists that actually have to remediate. Too often, they’re not even working from the same set of data.

It’s not like organisations don’t have the tools to protect themselves. Gartner claims that 60% of breaches could be stopped if existing controls are just configured properly. But even if they get this right, many teams lack the business context to effectively prioritise exposures for remediation.
