'Recovery Position: Is Your Organisation Really Resilient, Or Will the Next Incident Turn Into a Hammer Horror?'

One of the things that singles out a RANT roundtable from all those other cybersecurity events is the willingness of participants to open up about the times when things went wrong. And among the most frequently recurring themes of these conversations is that, no matter what flashy security and identity-management products were installed, what access policies were enacted, what level of buy-in the security leadership had from the board, nor how through the regulatory compliance and supply-chain auditing had been, when an attack hits, nobody is ready.

Julien Mousqueton remembers the moment he found out he wasn’t ready, despite decades in cybersecurity. He was about 23 hours in to leading the response to a catastrophic incident and he realised there was an important tool he didn’t have. Everything was offline, including the office vending machine, and his SOC team were running on fumes. To keep them going they needed those sugary snacks. So his organisation’s resiliency came to rest on Julien, stalking the building, looking for a hammer so he could break into the machine to feed his people.

Today, Mousqueton works for Cohesity, a cybersecurity giant but by no means a household name. The 6,000-employee, Santa Clara-headquartered company offers a plethora of solutions based around backups and disaster-recovery, but the real product it is selling is trust: trust not just in your own processes and procedures, your people and the tools and training you give them, but in the data your business is built on. When that’s all pulled together, they suggest, you’ll have the ability to get back up next time an attack leaves you breathless on the canvas.

So leave your in-built reticence at home, bring your most honest and open self, and join Julien, and a group of your fellow cybersecurity leadership peers, for an evening of fine dining and finer conversation. It’s time to find out what real resilience looks like inside your organisation – and to make sure you can remember where you’ve left your hammer.
